HISTORY OF THE USA CHOIR

The University of San Agustin (USA) Choir has a long and storied history that spans decades, emerging from a small singing group and growing into one of the most respected choirs in the Philippines. Its origins trace back to the 1970s when Father Angel Dulanto, O.S.A., founded a modest singing ensemble known as "The Song Weavers." This early group laid the foundation for the vibrant choral culture that would later flourish at the University of San Agustin. Father Dulanto’s vision was to provide students with an opportunity to express themselves through music, fostering a love for choral singing while emphasizing the importance of harmony and teamwork.

In 1974, Father Ezcurra took the initiative to form a new, more specialized group within the university's growing music community. This group, "The Troubadours," was composed of highly skilled and dedicated singers from the USA Conservatory of Music. Father Ezcurra’s formation of The Troubadours marked a pivotal moment in the choir's history. The group became synonymous with excellence in choral music, and they quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest choral ensembles in the region. Their performances were characterized by impeccable technique, emotional depth, and a rich, resonant sound. The Troubadours were often called upon to perform during special university events, dignitary visits, and religious celebrations, solidifying their status as the premier choral group at the University of San Agustin

As the years passed, The Song Weavers and The Troubadours maintained their legacy and impressive reputation under the guidance of Dean Salvacion Jardenil and Mr. Gerardo Muyuela, who succeeded Father Ezcurra. Under their leadership, the choir continued to thrive, reaching new heights of musical achievement. They were instrumental in expanding the choir’s repertoire, introducing a mix of classical, contemporary, and Filipino choral pieces that resonated with audiences locally and abroad. Dean Jardenil, with her vast knowledge of choral music, brought a wealth of experience to the choir, ensuring that the standards of performance and discipline were upheld. Mr. Muyuela, on the other hand, provided invaluable contributions to the choir's artistic direction, bringing his own passion for music to the ensemble.
